Start with the home, not just the boiler

A heat pump needs a system designed around the home’s heat demand and heat emitters. The installer should assess insulation, heat loss, radiators or underfloor heating, hot-water needs, controls and the outdoor unit location. Replacing a boiler with a heat pump is a whole-system change, not a like-for-like boiler swap.

Understand the SEAI grant route

SEAI currently lists support for eligible heat-pump systems, possible central-heating upgrades and a renewable-heat bonus for replacing an existing fossil-fuel heating system. The published maximum bundle is up to €12,500 for houses and €9,500 for apartments, subject to dwelling type, eligibility and approved works. Grant amounts and rules can change; check the current SEAI heat pump grant page.

For an individual grant, SEAI says to obtain the grant offer before starting works and use a registered contractor. A registered One Stop Shop can manage a broader upgrade and its grant process. Ask which route fits your plans.

What to compare in quotes

  • Room-by-room heat-loss calculation and system design
  • Heat pump model, output and expected operating temperatures
  • Radiator or underfloor changes and hot-water cylinder details
  • Electrical work, controls, commissioning and user handover
  • Grant paperwork, timelines, exclusions and payment stages
  • After-sales service and warranty terms

Plan the sequence

Ask the contractor to explain assessment, grant application, design, installation, commissioning and post-works paperwork in order. Do not start grant-supported works before receiving the required approval. Keep written quotes, the signed contract, technical documents and completion records.

Common questions

Can every boiler home switch to a heat pump?

Suitability depends on the property, heat loss, system design and available space. An assessment is needed.

How much is the SEAI grant?

SEAI currently lists up to €12,500 for houses and €9,500 for apartments for eligible heat-pump systems. Amounts and eligibility depend on the home and approved works; verify the live SEAI guidance.

Should I apply for the grant before installation?

Yes. SEAI says individual-grant approval must be in place before works start.

Can I keep my existing radiators?

Possibly, but the designer must check each room’s heat demand and the radiators’ output at heat-pump temperatures.
